Private Trustee Companies are privately incorporated companies established to act as trustee for one or more connected family trusts. They provide flexibility and professional trust administration while allowing the client to oversee the trustee, and the ability to change the administrator if required.

A typical structure would be for the Private Trust Company to be owned by a Purpose Trust. The Private Trust Company would usually engage an institutional trustee (for example Abacus) to act as day-to-day trust administrator.

A company, which as a purely private arrangement acts as a trustee for one or more trusts, is exempt from the requirement to hold a Trust Service Providers licence provided the administration of the relevant trusts is undertaken by a licensed provider.
